Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump starting charging his own campaign five times higher in rent after he began accepting big donations, reports the Huffington Post.
In March, the Trump campaign paid Trump Tower $35,458 a month in rent, the same rate it had paid for the past year. At the time, Trump was paying for all his campaign expenditures and still paying lip service to his promise that his campaign would be entirely self-funded.
But after clinching the nomination, Trump began courting big Republican donors and holding fundraisers. Suddenly, his rent began to rise. “The FEC filings show that Trump began increasing the rent at Trump Tower starting with the May 31 payment of $72,800. The Trump campaign paid $110,684 in rent on June 9, and $169,758 on July 10,” notes HuffPo.
The Trump campaign responded to HuffPo’s reporting by saying they had expanded into larger facilities. But HuffPo notes that the number of Trump staffers has not drastically increased: “The campaign’s number of paid employees and consultants went from 166 in May, to 139 in June, to 172 in July.”
