I think this one is mostly about demographics. Texas is becoming gradually more Latino and Latinos are more likely to vote Democrat.

This is the reason that the GoP wants to become more inclusive of minorities as they are doomed if they lose Texas. And it is why they keep trying to persuade Latino communities that their ideals are in tune with GoP ideals: we won't help you one bit; but if you make it, we will give you a tax break and expect you to contribute to our party; these are like Mexican ideas, right?

Which is why Trump is so wise to be sympathetic to Latino issues. Why he reaches out to Mexican immigrants (many are criminals and rapists but some, he assumes, are good people), Mexican construction workers (he employs thousands of Mexicans), Mexican food workers (he eats Mexican food for lunch), Latino journalists (allowing them into his press conference until they ask an actual question) and Mexican heritage judges. That kind of thing. Now, all he asks is for them to give him a chance. What do they have to lose?

Reliably Republican Texas Shows Signs of Cracking Under Trump

For a generation, being Texan has been as much about a love for the Alamo and barbecue as for picking Republican presidents. Now, with Donald Trump as the party’s nominee, there are signs that the grip on the Lone Star State may be weakening.

Trump arrives in Austin Tuesday for a rally after a poll released last week by left-leaning Public Policy Polling shows him ahead of Democrat Hillary Clinton by 6 percentage points, one of the slimmest margins in recent Texas history. Among voters 45 and under, Clinton is beating Trump by 25 points. A June poll from the University of Texas/Texas Tribune showed Trump leading Clinton by 8 percentage points.

“He’s negatively impacting the future of the Republican Party in Texas, said Jerry Patterson, a Republican who formerly held the position of Texas Land Commissioner.
