Trump's charity claims could violate fraud laws

He could be held liable if he failed to fulfill promises to donate proceeds from his book 'Crippled America.'

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has come under fire after news organizations were unable to verify claims that his products’ proceeds go to charity, as he has previously stated. The Donald has declared that money from his products—like Trump University, Trump Vodka, and a Trump board game—benefit charity. If that turns out to be untrue, Trump could have violated fraud laws and be held liable under Section 349 of New York’s General Business Law. None of Trump’s gains from Trump University have gone to charity, Politico reports. Only a few hundred dollars of charitable giving from Trump Vodka has been proven. According to Politico, lawyers at the New York Attorney General’s Office have not yet decided whether to look into the issue.
