A sling blade is a straight handle with two
pieces of metal straps to a blade that is perpendicular to the handle. You can swing
it back and forth as the blade is sharp on
both sides. Of course, one I bought six
months ago lasted about three weeks. It
will not cut some big weeds but it will
get most of them. I cut down some small
trees that grow like weeds. If I get into
the thick weeds I swing it too hard and
try to cut too much at once. I probably
should be out using it now but there is
too much water out there.

re: "I took the sling blade out for about
an hour. That is too much work for
an old man."

Is that the same as a scythe? I used one of those a few years ago to take down a bunch of stalky crap since it was too heavy for a power lawnmower. My arms hurt for weeks afterwards. It's hard on the joints! Now? That's what the tractor and brush hog is for.

The next time I mow, I'll ask my wife to take some video so you can see what I'm dealing with. On a tractor, it's easy. By hand? It was a HUGE job.
