Let me see . . .
Do you know what an acetylene torch looks like?

In the movies, where they are using a welding rig with
two big bottles - one is full of acetylene gas and the
other with liquid oxygen. Mix the two, add a spark and
keep feeding the gases and one gets a very HOT flame.
With this one does the 'torch welding'.

Arc welding, one has like a BIG transformer and a metal
rod. The electricity runs through the rod, makes a
spark, then through the metal to ground. The heat
of the current melts the metal rod (and the metal
one is welding) and, if done right, the melted metal
is what welds the two metals together.

Of course, if one is trying to weld something thin the
welder just burns a hole through it.

To make it simple, for Torch welding, think fire.

For arc welding, think an electrical arc.

(Both make the metal very hot, so be careful.)

re: "(You could look up 'how to weld' on the internet.)"

I'll have to buy a book. At this point, I don't even know the difference between torch welding and arc welding. I know that torch welding is better, but I don't really know why.

And then, of course, I'll have to buy some equipment. Buy, buy, buy. *sigh* Getting away from a dependence on money ain't cheap!
