I was very proficient at map reading and coordinates and used those abilities many time with LT in the middle of the jungle numerous times.

For the car:

Also, just buy a small size ATLAS. I carry one in the Net pocket on the back of the driver seat and that is its home. Even though I have GPS on my phone, on my Car's screen, plus a nice large Garmin with free lifetime map updates, I am never without directions but a MAP is often the best way to know exactly where in the heck you are.

I suggest NUTS, TRAILMIX, Protein or Granola bars for food. I keep several in my glove box all year round...
A Good blanket, flashlight, spare batteries, battery operated lantern are good choices to have in car also.

I also CARRY, as in having a weapon for which I am properly licensed to carry.

XTRA insulating SOCKS are a good idea also to keep yer feet from frostbite in severe cold...

...food a good idea. Maybe something that won't freeze and bust in the winter or melt in the summer. Bottled water another good idea.

...if ya like me and do most of ya drivin in sneakers ya might want to put some waterproof hiking boots and a pair of wool socks in there some place. A compass and a map of whatever state ya happen to be driving in.

...hey micro, did you ever take that compass / map reading course in the military? Mighta been called Orientering or something like that. Forward Arty guys gotta be pretty good at that.
