While "naked and afraid" has the distinction of being highlighted on this forum's introductory page, there are, or have been, numerous good shows about survival in nature, mostly on cable TV. I've been watching and recording a lot of them. (I was actually watching an episode of naked and afraid when I saw that ribit had created this forum.) They include:
Naked and Afraid Survivorman (the show that invented the whole idea of televised wilderness survival) Dual Survival Alaska: the Last Frontier Yukon men Ultimate Survival Alaska Doomsday Preppers Mountain Men Live Free or Die (which I wish was focused on New Hampshire, but it isn't.) and, of course, Green Acres. (which is where I get my best ideas.)
I most enjoy Survivorman (which isn't made anymore. One that I often think about is an episode of Alaska the Last Frontier where the farm lady needed to gather up her older hens for slaughter. The trouble is, she first needed to get them into the hen house (they were running around outside at the time.). Chasing them in seemed like a lesson in futility. One of the guys on the show showed her a shortcut: Get a long bamboo poll or a branch, and tie a black trashbag to the end of it so it dangles like a hook from a fishing pole. Then wave the bag well over the heads of the chickens. The chickens will think it's a circling hawk and will run for shelter.
She tried it and damned if it didn't work! Okay, so it seems like a little thing, but THAT will be really useful to me! I can't wait to try it when I start raising chickens. Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months |
