Maybe Obama buys the notion that one Europe solves the problem of European war.

Actually, the problem of European war results from it.

Britain's tradition has always been to let different cultures, traditions and sovereignties exist alongside one another - with trade providing the means of building relationships and developing a stable peace.

Offa managed to trade cloaks and coal with Charlemagne. Napoleon called England a nation of shopkeepers. Europe was sold to the British as a common market.

No one was ever asked if they wished to be part of a federal Europe. It has no part of being British.

He's arguing with this cartoon from June, 1940, which embodies British memories of the War.

Won't end well for the President who removed the bust of Churchill from the Oval Office.

You don't get to invoke the War in favour of the EU in Britain. It is the imperial tendency in Europe which has caused problems all along. This is the reason why so many people are unhappy with the EU. The desire for power always goes to the head of the Germans and the French to the detriment of the other nations of Europe. It did so with Charlemagne, Napoleon, the Kaiser, Hitler. Now Merkel (and Juncker). Wash, rinse, repeat. The British have always preferred their little island in its silver sea over the continent's delusions of grandeur.

Obama has been remarkably foolish in getting involved in this way.
