It's hardly 'free'. It costs the hospital anywhere from $600 to $1200 per ER visit even if it's for something as simple as a cold or a bruised finger. Someone will eventually have to pay, if not the patient then the next guy who's treated but has insurance as eventually those expenses get amortized over all the people who do pay their bills/charge their insurance. Universal healthcare is as much about protecting society as it is protecting individuals.
