hi dig,

supply siders said, and still say, that by some voodoo, reductions in tax rates will generate more income via innovation than is lost via rate reduction.

this is absurd. we've seen over and over that it doesn't work unless the tax rates are extremely high.

what seems to be the real aim? to create the deficits they can then use to curtail welfare for the vulnerable.

it's simple brutallism. they pretend being brutal makes the patient healthy. but the state of nature in this model is survival only of the fittest and luckiest. the losers die. and for most compassionate people, that is not an acceptable model.

and in the end, we are beginning to find out that a certain measure of altruism is efficient.

largely yes, and in none of that list did I say that progressive taxation was part of the make-up.
Opposition to the Bush tax cuts is purely a fiscal response, they were clearly going to cause deficits, old guard fiscal conservatives not big fans of that. Sure they want to shrink govtment, but whatever size it endes up being, pay for it, pay for what is, not what you would like to be. Friedman as a representative/leader of a school of thought better represented by old guard republicans than any other politcal group. Taxing gas is 2 things, 1) a broad consumprion based tax specific to the users of something that 2) the actual costs are not realized (the permenant stationing of a few aircraft carrier task forces not really figured into the cost of a gallon and 3) it is a uniquely valuable resource that shouldn't be lazily squandered and the market is inefficient in recognizing that.
