You caused me to remember something.
I worked for a number of years for
the old phone company. Back then
almost no one ever got fired. If
an employee came to work but did
little or no work, he was promoted
to first line management. I was
working in a group of about 400.
We sat at desks and helped customers
with troubles. One guy could not show
up for work on time even though he did
almost no work when there. We had a
supervisor who was about to retire and
took it on herself to try to get the guy
to show up on time. He came in late one
day and she told him he was late and that
he needed to show up on time. About a week
later he was late again. She sent him home
for a day without pay. She told him that he
needed to follow the schedule. A couple of
weeks later he was late again. She told him
that he needed to show up on time or he could
be fired. She suspended him for three days.
Less than a month later he was late again.
She suspended him for a week. After about a
month and a half he was late again. He was
suspended for two weeks. The next time he
was late, he was fired. He was the only
person I ever heard of who got fired. I never
could understand how someone who got paid
what we got, could not be bothered to show up
on time.
