If one believes in providence, or as some would put it, karma, this may prove to have been the absolute worst scenario for the GOP going into THIS particular election year.

Between the Republican leaders in the Senate and the GOP presidential candidates out on the campaign trail and in their upcoming debates (as we've already seen with last night's utter debacle on stage in Greenville, SC) the opportunity for them to demonstrate to the American public, particularly the critically important independent voters, that they are behaving in a totally inappropriate manner could doom not only their hopes of winning the White House but also of hanging onto the Senate (remember that there are MORE Republican Senate seats at stake this election cycle than Democratic seats, 24 versus 10, to be exact).

It would truly be poetic justice if McConnell does manage to prevent any Obama nomination getting a fair hearing in the Senate between now and November, only to have the Democrats win both the White House and a majority in the Senate where the new President will have a better chance of replacing Scalia with a much more moderate or even liberal-leaning judge. The Right may yet rue the day where they did NOT take advantage of forcing a lame-duck president into nominating someone who could actually be confirmed by a Republican-controlled Senate, as this might have been their last chance to do so, period.

Was the timing of Scalia's death a sign?

From the evangelical 'god'?, since we are told their 'god' speaks in this fashion...
why else would 'god' take Scalia now!
