If he panders on such a critical point, then he is probably worse than if he is sincere.

There are certain issues that nearly everyone agrees on. The secular basis of law is one such thing. Open the religious can of worms and the middle ages leap out.

Looking at the candidates, maybe America's future is grim. One of these days, another one of the nutters is going to make it to the presidency. And then we are back to secret rendition, torture, wars based on lies, collapsing economies etc.

As I have said before, it will save everyone a lot of hassle if they can split the US into three or four or fifty countries. Then folks can live how they want instead of arguing about what is the best way forever. Clearly, Jesus Land wants different things from the North East and the West.

I don't believe that CF. He panders to that faction of his base, like the opportunist he is. He does pander as he did on immigration but lacking true conviction he folds under opposition or lack of support. His conviction seems limited to conservative constitutional interpretation, small less regulated government and fiscal restraint. The good news is, he's been in elected representative gov't positions for a long time. That provides plenty of opportunities for opposition research.
