hi tkc,

i suspect the dems also get something out of the status quo. they get to paint the republicans as anti-immigration (which may partly be true although like you say, cheap agriculture and domestic services are fuelled by illegal/migrant workers which they secretly like) which helps them win the latino vote.

so perhaps neither side wants a simple vote about the wall.

hence, the republican electorate's response to trump.

At least since Pat Buchanan the GoP has pounded the table on securing the boarder during election campaigns. It's a very attractive message to less educated blue color voters and it has worked. But it is just an election talking point. If they really wanted a more secure boarder they have had many opportunities to pass a limited bill to do that. They always allow it to be a part of a larger "immigration reform" package which they know their members will defeat. They could pass a stand alone "build the wall" bill tomorrow and Obama would sign it. They won't for the simple truth is that they don't want it. Stupid voters keep falling for the charade. Illegals keep wages down and provide them w/ cheap childcare, maids, cooks and gardners. Dems need to stop being "politically correct" and call them out - put up the bill, we will pass it.
