i hate being the person who can't find a tolerant model for mixing islam with western culture. but i came to the conclusion that it's kinda a zero sum game. it's either this kind of thing going on forever, or something has to give. in the west, in my view, it has to be islam that gives. we can't have an islam that claims to be victimised and responds in this kind of way. it has to conform to a secular social/political/legal model - as no doubt many moderate moslems do. but clearly continuity between the umma in surrey and the umma in raqqa and riyadh cannot stand. so we need discontinuity within islam in order to have peace. such schisms already exist within islam. now we need a similar schism between islam and weslam.

Another good post, alea.

there's an intellectually lazy response to the issues we face, which says we must assume everyone shares the same values and we'll get along over time. that's obama's line.

I'll never understand how anyone could possibly believe "everyone shares the same values." Share values with folks that treat women as second-class citizens? And I'm not talking about just a small subset of "radicalized" followers.

And, of course, I could type another three minutes listing other "values" we don't share.

I have no tolerance for any politician that hasn't/won't make the effort to understand the religion enough to have a clue what we're up against. Or maybe worse yet, have an understanding but be too gutless and "politically correct" to face it.
