It begins to make sense.
The Turkomen are financing their war with Assad by acting as middlemen for the black market ISIS oil trade with Turkey.
Russia is attacking the oil sources and supply routes to defend Assad and attack ISIS.
Turkey is protecting the Turkomen to preserve its allies and the money it makes. For them, ISIS is a lesser evil than Assad.
The plane was shot down to protect the oil flow and to warn Putin.
The Americans surely know all of this and must be turning a blind eye to Turkey's oil trade. Turkey is part of NATO. If its role in the oil trade becomes known, there will be pressure to rescind its membership of NATO. Its loss would be a huge blow. Some folks in those parts see the US as secretly in cahoots with ISIS. Which doesn't make any sense if all you see is the saintly posturing of Obama. But does make sense if the locals know where the oil is going.
Obama is using the Kurds in Syria to attempt to seal the border with Turkey and stop the oil flow. Hence the importance of the border towns and the recent attempt to cut the road between Raqqa and Mosul.
Turkey, of course, is not helping the Kurds. Indeed, occasionally it is attacking them for reasons that aren't apparent if you read the news.
Meanwhile, more than oil is moving back and forth across the Turkish border.
