These aren't a complete set of alternative choices.
I am sure that Islam is neither inherently peaceful nor inherently violent, but it allows interpretations consistent with either or neither adjective.
So it doesn't require anyone to twist its teachings to deliver a violent interpretation. It just requires a person to elevate some suras over others. Same as it isn't twisting Islam's inherent violence to find suras favouring peacefulness.
The difficulty is that around 15% of Moslems appear sympathetic to a violent interpretation. That makes it a nearly impossible religion to live alongside. Any thoughtful Moslem would likely agree and would want that 15% number to be much nearer to zero.
The equivalent number for Christianity and Buddhism is tiny.
