A former aide to Vladimir Putin instrumental in the creation of the news service Russia Today was found dead in the DuPont Circle Hotel in Washington D.C. this Thursday.
According to ABC News, the Metropolitan PD is investigating the death of Mikhail Lesin at the D.C. hotel he was staying at. Russian officials are working with authorities to investigate the matter, though there’s some question of why Lesin was in the hotel in the first place.
Russian media outlets have reported he suffered a heart attack.
Lesin is considered to be one of the main people responsible for cracking down on press freedoms in Russia, and was instrumental in creating Russia Today (RT), the news outlet backed by the Russian government with U.S. headquarters in the nation’s capital.
Some of the news reports about Lesin’s death have included a request last year by U.S. Senator Roger Wicker that the Department of Justice look into potential corruption and money laundering on Lesin’s part.
