The leaders of China and Taiwan have met for the first time since their 1949 split

President Xi Jinping of China shook hands with Ma Ying-jeou, the president of Taiwan, in the first ever meeting of the neighbors and longtime rivals, an act both sides described as a breakthrough gesture meant to promote peace and mutual prosperity.
The meeting, at the Shangri-La Hotel in the city-state of Singapore, is a high point in the two leaders’ efforts to bridge the divisions of civil war and decades of animosity.
