hi d&o,

i've never been asked about my background. but you have correctly observed that i remove myself and my life experience from the conversation. this is because i figured early that the internet has many eyes and not all of them see caringly. eg i made almost no friends amongst wave investors because i saw and heard how that knowledge was abused. amongst the few i trusted, at least one abused it. i know who that person was.

i agree that not everyone who is poor is a victim. but there are many who are just unlucky. and many who can't find a way up the ladder who are smarter and harder working than those who can. unfortunately, there is no reliable system for winnowing the unlucky from the lazy. so you can't make a perfect decision. of the realistic options, i would rather a system that properly protects the unlucky and hence allows some lazy people to take advantage, than one which excludes some unlucky people in order to make absolutely sure that no freeloaders succeed.

i have worked with people who had great resumes and no talent and those with no luck and tremendous skill. for me, arbitrary fortune rules. we work hard to get the best chance of success, but that doesn't mean we will succeed. success is in the gift of providence.

in an arbitrary universe, we do well to be like bees. we need to cooperate to thrive. not that we shouldn't have private property. but on occasion the wealth curve can wind up too steep. gross inequality is obnoxious and unstable.

if I was 0% HRC, saw the media as victimising the GOP, felt that exposing Trump as a clown was a bad thing

I don't think exposing Trump is a bad thing. But he's doing a fine job of it himself. He doesn't need to be asked if he's a clown, nor should he be.

I agree that comparing answers is a good thing. But I would have each candidate in a sound-proof room while the other candidate answers the question

I've actually said that for years, with near seriousness. Lock 'em in, and turn on their mike only when it's their turn to talk!

I think GWB was the worst President in my life time. Until Obama. I detest "nation building". I distinctly remember in a debate him (GWB) saying that he did too. Then what did he do?!!!!!!

blaming the poor for their situation

Many of them ARE responsible for their own situation. Although you've never been willing to share your background (to provide insight to your perspective), several years ago I posted at length about mine. About how I grew up rather poor, amongst poor, and how my father died when we were in high school. He was making a little over $2/hr at the time.

About how I worked at a packing plant all through college. A lousy job. And knew/saw dozens (hundreds?) of folks that would hire on and quit within a week, or a day, or even morning breaktime, because they didn't want to work. Or get fired for not showing up. I watched many folks make bad decisions, and saw the outcomes. (Not that it's rocket science.) I have no patience for those that can work and won't. Or for those that are apologists for them.

I don't believe that "poverty" includes those that have so many government benefits that they have heated/cooled places to live with cable tv and cell phones. Poor? Maybe. Poverty? No way.
