That is a nice chart CF. It shows Nixon's small surplus in his 1st term, the subsequent deficits thru Ford. The slight comeback under Carter and the awful recession under Reagan's 1st ( I lost two businesses in that one). Then the drop in Bush1's which cost him the election in '92 to Clinton. But then the dramatic comparisons: the Clinton period steady push back into surplus (PAYGO helped) for the first time since early Nixon, followed by Bush 2's drive ( tax cuts while fighting 2 wars) into the "great recession." Of course the climb from there has been slow though steady under O, which of course could have been much faster had the GOP controlled legislatures agreed to an infrastructure rebuild project. Pretty clear stuff unless one chooses to be misled.

hi tkc,

a nice chart of the deficit vs GDP. inherited by obama: deficit heading to 9+%. currently 2.8% and headed lower.

https://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/FYFSGDA188S

perhaps the republicans haven't noticed that obama has been doing exactly what they wish him to. deficit is now less, proportionately, than under saint reagan.

hardly anyone looks at the numbers. reality isn't on the stage.
