Hi tkc and D&O,

There's no equivalence of crazy on the left and the right.

The current Democratic positions are reasonably sensible and grounded in reality. The spectrum between liberalism and democratic socialism (different to socialism) is fairly normal for a left-leaning centrist party.

It's only the GOP that is anti-rational and basically nuts. They desperately need to occupy ground a bit like the UK Tory party, which believes in science and which has a Judaeo-Christian morality without the fundamentalist tinge.

Sometimes you want a party that leans against expenditure and government programmes and sometimes you want a party that increases government programmes and raises taxes. Depends on the circumstances.

Doesn't have to be extreme. Like steering a car. It's best when you nudge a bit one way and a bit the other.

Hi D&O, I think it could happen. It would require a proven moderate leader w/ very deep pockets (like Bloomberg) and take a few cycles. Pick off a few influencial elected national legislators from secure seats to start the nucleus. Todays primaries demonstrate the hunger amongst the voters for a middle option. A substantial moderate 3rd party would force both the far right and far left to seek compromise from the middle to pass anything. First we'd need a Bloomberg.
