There's another side to this story that will be very interesting to see what the consequences of this will be as it plays out and that is that VW was the first company to produce the so-called 'clean diesel' that was commercially feasible for passenger cars. And because of the 'results' they 'achieved' became the defacto standard by which both the international and industry standards were set to. Now what is someone like a GM is going to do who had also been working for years producing clean diesel technology using these same 'standards' as their targets and if it turns out that they have managed to meet them WITHOUT having to fake their testing results, what could GM, and the other automakers who have sunk millions, if not billions, into this effort demand from the courts if they decided to confront VW on this? This is going to be a very long and drawn out tale that could have all kinds of ramifications for both VW and the rest of the automotive industry.

Incredible story of corporate duplicity.
I suspect that the algorithm used to defeat the Federal tests in the US were probably similarly used in the rest of the world.

At Volkswagen passing the EPA test was the standard, not cleaning emissions.

It is startling how the other manufacturers did not pick up on VW's fraudulent numbers.

Europe has developed a habit of punitively punishing American behemoths with monstrous fines.
Microsoft and Apple are good examples.

What the EPA will fine VW and what the Justice Department will do could be criminal prosecution and a billion dollar fine.

The extent of the damage at VW is mind-boggling.
