clo, after WWII most people had to
work hard to make a living wage.
They did not have anyone but family
to depend on to be able to have a
place to live and food on the table.
My grandmother lived with us because
she did not have an income. I was
raised to work hard and take care of
myself. When I was a kid I listened
to the Lone Ranger because we did
not go to the movies or own a TV.
I was 8 years old before we got a
TV. I played with my brothers and
sister and kids in the neighborhood.
We raised chickens in the backyard
because a company in the neighborhood
let chickens escape from time to time.
That gave us eggs for breakfast and
chicken for lunch on Sunday. BTW, I
still do not care for chicken. But I
learned that I should earn money and
spend it wisely. Later, I watched Mom
get fired from managing a dime store
because the chain got sold and the
new owners "Did not have women managers".
I saw her buy a small convenience store
and start cooking donuts to make money.
For about 20 years she got up at 3:30 AM,
six days a week and closed at 6:00 PM with
the help of my Dad. She taught me to not
spend money unless I had to spend it.
During those years I watched lots of
people buy all kinds of new "toys" that
they could not really afford. So I guess
I probably am a snob.
