This actually happens frequently.
In my own wanderings, I have run into it in the discussion of Byzantine art and literature (which had been thought of as mostly second or third division and some historians were promoting the notion that it was under-rated), and the freedom of women in the middle ages.
The point is that history is quite easy to reinterpret if you choose a different perspective. Usually you can justify both sides of an argument within a particular context.
