By the way, in European political terms, I am not especially a person of the left. I am not especially excited by the minority discussion (eg I think the issue of racist policing is partly confused with the policing of poverty). I don't reject the US premise of muscular individualism but I think of it as a non-exclusive virtue (eg the public good also matters). I think generalisations about the relief of poverty break down when you consider the case of individuals (eg some people are lazy and sometimes there are no jobs for hard workers). At the same time, I think US gun control is pathetic, the economics of the right is often plain wrong (eg it predicted massive inflation as a result of the Fed's response to the 2008 crash and this tells you the theory is deeply flawed) and I think the US warmongers are criminal monsters (eg over the Iraq war and subsequent torture policy).

America's centre is far to the right of most other advanced economies.

My main complaint is legal rather than political. I think the US constitution isn't up to the task of running the modern US polity. And since I want the USA to thrive, I criticise it constructively and suggest improvements.

I am not sure you are saying something different to me.

You agree that people on the left are not down on Obama at the moment. I was trying to put a little measurement into the statement that there's a massive discontent with Obama. It's mainly among Republicans, and if Trump's candidacy is the principal enthusiastic expression of it, it can easily be ignored.

In the last couple of elections PPP has been a fairly reliable polling organisation. Scroll down to the bottom to see Obama's figures. Not surprisingly, discontent is pretty much just a partisan number.
