Hi D&O,

I think you overstate the discontent. On the left, he is increasingly seen as having done an immense job.

Saving the country from Bush's economic disaster. Done.

Stopping the inherited expansion of the deficit in real terms. Done.

Overseeing an increasing number of jobs. Done.

Recasting the healthcare system successfully. Done.

Avoiding new wars. Done.

Moving minority issues forwards. Done.

etc.

Obviously this may be challenged by his opponents, particularly in foreign policy terms (eg surrounding the mess in the Middle East), but he ain't a Republican. He was voted in to do Liberal things.

If the boorish portion of the discontent is crystallised in 20% of Republicans, it isn't all that alarming.

He is winning the elbow throwing contest as the crowd jostles for position at the starting line. But he'll eventually be left in the dust once the starting gun sounds.

I don't think he's really as attractive to folks as you and others assume. I think it's just an indication of the massive discontent with Washington and this current administration.

He is a buffoon, and I firmly believe most of the folks that supposedly favor him currently know it, and will back off when it matters.

He'd be an even better independent for the Dems. Wouldn't take but just a little support, which would come from otherwise GOP voters, to assure their victory.

I believe the vast majority of the American electorate is various combinations of stupid, ill-informed, uninterested, and/or nuts. But even so, I don't for a second believe they give him a real chance when it gets right down to it.

If I'm wrong on this......oh my.
