“We are a community that thinks we are the best, because our religion is the best of all. Everyone else is second to us therefore it’s futile to expect us to adopt British Values as we see them as inferior to our values by virtue of being the followers of the best book given to humankind. Why would we leave our superior values to take on something that is inferior?”

“He died doing what he loved.” No, I am not referring to any one of the five slain U.S. servicemen at the navy reserve center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I am referring to their killer, Islamic terrorist Mohammed Yusef Abdulaziz. This young jihadist chose the path of conduct declared by Allah in the Koran to be the right one. This righteous path requires the removal of nonbelievers who hinder the advancement of Islam and the establishment of the supremacy of Allah.

“Well I think definitely the only endgame is one day we would want the Shariah to be in command even in America and in Britain and in China and in Russia and everywhere else,” replied Choudary. “But in the meantime the things we should (inaudible) including the withdrawal of the Jewish occupation in Palestine, the support of the dictators and tyrants in the Muslim world, the pumping out of their own propaganda and the ideology by either the internet and Hollywood, etc. There’s quite a few things I think need to be done for there to be some kind of treaty or some kind of normal relationship. But definitely these things won’t work forever, because ultimately the Muslims believe that we need to propagate Islam. I think ambassadors will be sent to these countries to teach them about Islam as an alternative and eventually I believe the Shariah will be in command. But in the meantime I think there could be some treaty that could mean cease fire.”

Certainly not going to appease people who make claims and take actions which cause harm to others simply because they have an ancient God as the justification of their beliefs.

Societies should be able to create their own moral belief systems and to pursue their curiosities regardless of the individual beliefs of religious people. Honour killing - nope. Female genital mutilation - nope. Scientific enquiry - yep. Music - yep. Throwing gay people off towers - nope. Apostacy - yep. Religious courts - nope.

Heck, sometimes religious and secular beliefs align! But in general, and with a few notable exceptions, it is nice to see societies make gradual progress against religious restrictions. Given time and a platform, collective expression usually defeats dogma.

Religions are also improved that way! Post-enlightenment Christianity is a very different thing from its pre-Trinitarian, Roman-era equivalent. The concerns of St Paul (eg over circumcision, blood-drinking) were not entirely the same as those of this Pope.
