"The second-quarter earnings season, with Wall Street analysts projecting weak results, could not have come at a worse moment for the markets.

The S&P 500 SPX, -1.26% has been battered over the past few weeks as the debt crisis in Greece and a crash in Chinese shares sapped confidence. As Alcoa kicks off the earnings season on Wednesday after the market close, investors will be looking at the results with trepidation.

Analysts are predicting a 4.5% year-over-year decline in earnings per share and a 4.5% decline in revenues for the S&P 500, according to FactSet. "
