Hi D&O,

When the issue is only toxicity, they tend to extend the perimeter downwind. They should do that, I agree.

But Acrylonitrile also has the capacity to polymerize explosively when exposed to heat. Its flash point is only 30°F. I imagine they don't want folks to panic. I believe this is why they have extended the perimeter for a mile in all directions.

The recommended perimeter for a spill (rather than a fire) for this material is only 150 feet.

I think they must fear a big explosion rather than just a fire.

The large evac area would seem to me to be more based on toxicity/inhalation health concerns than explosion.

This is not one of the chemicals I worked with in my previous life, and I don't know a lot about it. Nor have I seen much info on the configuration of the fire site. I wonder if they have much concern about a BLEVE.
