hi clo,

not sure why homeowners should receive an advantage over renters.

that doesn't mean i think everyone should pay the same tax rate as they currently do with reliefs removed. it means that a renter (generally poorer than an owner) should not be excluded from the benefit of a relief.

if the total relief granted to tax payers is equal regardless of whether they own a home or not, the redistribution in favour of wealthier home owners would be curtailed.

this might affect tax rates for everyone. but favouring home owners over renters isn't a socially benevolent form of redistribution. it tends to pass tax advantages to the wealthy rather than the needy.

i disagree with your reasoning for seniors getting relief, although there are good arguments for protecting seniors. not moving from one town to another isn't something tax people should concern themselves with. and the support of seniors via social security and medicare is taken out of the wages of people currently working (and in a majority of instances) sending children to school and they need help as much as seniors do.

I live in NY, a county just above Westchester.

Until last year, before my senior age & lower income offered me an enhanced STAR tax relief I paid over 10,000 for school & property taxes.
I've lived in this modest high ranch since 1969. At that time our taxes were about 700.00.
Until 2 years ago we also paid for garbage pickup, now its included in our taxes. Water & sewer are a separate bill.
The schools are good & plowing in the winter is great.

We have a wonderful library! I utilize it, have an online account & can request books, movies. They partner with many libraries so if they don't have it they get it & call to let me know when its in. Movies are free to keep for 7 days, more if no one else has them on request.

I'm not sure ending tax relief for families that own homes would be helpful. We want a flow of young people in the neighborhoods.
Living & contributing to a community for a lifetime should offer relief to seniors. Especially since we don't have children going to school any longer.
