New York State Police Respond to Possible Sighting of Prison Escapees

Two convicted murderers who staged an elaborate escape from New York’s largest prison were believed to have been spotted by the State Police on Saturday in Friendship, N.Y., a person with knowledge of the investigation said.
The “possible sighting,” the person said, raised the prospect of a capture two weeks after the men — Richard W. Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 35 — broke out of the maximum-security facility with the help of makeshift dummies, power tools and a tunnel.
The developments on Saturday afternoon drew a swarm of law enforcement officers to Allegany County, in the southwestern corner of the state, as helicopters roared overhead and state troopers closed roadways.
