All I heard was that she had two black 'brothers' with whom she attended school and it was during this period in her life, as a result of how she was treated by her classmates, where she came to empathize more deeply with the plight of African-Americans. I suspect that this may have contributed to her becoming aliened from her parents, which would have only reinforced her identifying more with her black friends and siblings than her white parents.
