When I was a kid, I did not collect many quarters, half dollars, or dollars. I made 45 cents an hour to 95 cents an hour. I did get upset when the Navajo ladies came in with sitting liberty quarters made into buttons and sewed to the sleeves of their blouses.

BTW, I have one silver dollar that was made on my grand-dad's birthday,(1897 if I remember correctly).

Buffalo Nickels were notorious for that as the dates were not placed on an area that was recessed and so they tended to wear off quickly. I've got maybe a dozen or so like that. Another one from that same era that had the problem was the Standing Liberty Quarter. Again I've got a couple with no date. It was only after collecting coins became popular that the mint started to make sure that the date and mint marks were placed where they would not be easily warn off.
