Buffalo Nickels were notorious for that as the dates were not placed on an area that was recessed and so they tended to wear off quickly. I've got maybe a dozen or so like that. Another one from that same era that had the problem was the Standing Liberty Quarter. Again I've got a couple with no date. It was only after collecting coins became popular that the mint started to make sure that the date and mint marks were placed where they would not be easily warn off.

My brother once was a head teller at a bank. One of the other tellers traded a roll of nickels to him because it was not long enough and looked to be short a nickel or two. He checked it and found it was all Indian head nickels. He sold them to me. Some were worn so bad that you could no read the dates. I got rid of those few and kept the rest.
