My brother was attending the Army intelligence school at Fort Holabird, Maryland during the riots after Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. Despite the fact that he was in the Intelligence Corp, the first night of the riots they were ordered to get in uniform and then they were taken to various parts of Baltimore and ordered to stand guard duty, 2 guys at a time, over night. They were issues M-14's but with NO ammo. Thankfully nothing happened and when the National Guard finally showed-up, they were relieved of duty and they went back to the Fort where they resumed their classwork. A few months later he was in Saigon, but as he told me, at least they let him have ammo there despite the fact that he was technically non-combat. Of course that didn't stop him from getting both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart while he was in country (we was there 22 months total) or having to do a tour in Iraq 40+ years later.
