But Republicans and their right wing moneyed class supporters want to add means-testing to Social Security and Medicare which would turn them into a welfare programs instead of an entitlements. Entitlements are something that people worked for and are owed no matter what their situation is when they start to take their benefits. But if you turn those programs into 'welfare' programs then the argument can be made that the people collecting the benefits didn't actually EARN them making it that much easier to justify cutting benefits. This is what Chris Christie has been spewing these past couple of weeks, so as to ingratiate himself with the 1% since they don't care if they lose their entitlements since it's a drop in the bucket for them, just as long as eventually none of their tax money is going to 'welfare' recipients, and that's exactly the argument that will be made a few years after they do start means-testing these programs.
