2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
The people have a zeal, a strong desire toward God, but they have no personal relationship or knowledge of HIM.
They KNOW of GOD but they do not KNOW GOD personally.
How sad. Many people today fit this description. People who attend a church service regularly. They have a HEAD knowledge of GOD but they have no HEART knowledge and intimate relationship with HIM because there has never been a time in their life that they have ASKED HIM to come into their heart and save them.
JESUS is a GIFT from GOD. Like every other GIFT, it is OFFERED to the recipients. UNLESS that GIFT is TAKEN, RECEIVED BY and embraced by the recipient, it merely remains a GIFT left un-opened and does not find a permanent dwelling or home in the life of the one to whom it was offered.
To KNOW of CHRIST is not the same as KNOWING Christ...
