pope francis has been fixing the problem of us catholicism.

i don't see modern christianity as generally damaging. indeed, i think it contains many nuggets of wisdom. but for the record, i don't include any fundamentalist reading as "modern". and there are far too many charlatans pretending to teach religious wisdom in the us that clearly have little appreciation for the values of the religion they proclaim. it seems you need not so much thoughtfulness as shiny teeth to command an audience in a mega-church. oh and an ability to hop between verses to build a thesis to confirm your bigotry.

but slavish devotion isn't the way i approach things. except perhaps setting aside slavish devotion.

I agree.

'Religious Conservatives' control the republican primaries, thus select their candidate for the general.

As for Catholicism, some cardinals/bishops/priests/ attempted to control voters in the recent past. Claiming that voting for John Kerry would be in essence a sin, because he followed the law that allows a woman to choose.

Now with Pope Francis, I expect that to be toned down.

As a person born into catholicism, attended parochial school, I have evolved. I'm more agnostic, yet I LOVE Pope Francis ;))
I tend to take the good & leave the rest & for me 'religion' doesn't help make me the best I can be.
