hi clo,
don't forget that the us version of christianity is a small fraction of it. non-us christians mostly seem benign to me. roman catholicism learnt to accept the world as it is along the way. you don't see pope francis or the archbishop of canterbury telling folks to disbelieve science because of a quote in the bible.
strict reading of any book is likely to lack the nuance necessary to deal with evolving cultures and realities. i say the same thing about the constitution as i do about christianity and islam. in my view, fundamentalist readings of any document are almost always poisonous. strict construction is as damaging to us politics as fundamentalism is to islam and christianity.
the world demands that we evolve. always. any man-made document which thinks it can stem that tide lacks the required canute-like humility.
people like pat robertson are simply ridiculous. but also, arrogant and lacking in any obvious wisdom.
