the usa has gigantic deserts for solar, excellent wind corridors, places for hydro electricity etc. but like many other countries who put money over the health of the planet, it prefers fracking.
I just returned from a long car trip that took me through several areas of west Texas. I knew they had a lot of wind farms out there, but I was actually astonished by what I saw.
One of them (or likely several end to end?) went on for at least thirty miles unbroken. It was something to behold.
But I also understand the NIMBY issues involved. Many dislike the destruction of the view, the death of birds, the noise, etc. And then, there's the fight over imminent domain in the building of power transmission systems. Where I live, there is a fight going on right now with a company that wants to build a line across this state to take Texas wind power to the east.
One thing is for sure, if we had a better infrastructure, more wind farms would pop up all over the windy plains.
In fact, they built (are building) a wind farm about 600 miles NW of here on land adjacent to farmland I own. They literally put turbines on the section across the road from me, but would not build on my land (I wanted them to) because there wasn't transmission capacity for any additional generation.
Will continue to be "interesting" to see how our various renewable energy efforts play out. (Especially now that oil is "low" again.)
