From your article :

When you look at ice coverage this year versus last, it's amazing that all of the lakes except Superior currently have more ice than this same date last year.

Great Lakes freeze over;

Lake Erie nearly 100% covered in ice

Lake Erie is nearly all the way iced over, while Lakes Huron and Superior are more than 80% frozen, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported. The lakes at least partially freeze over every year and ice coverage peaks mid-February.

. . .

The 2015 freeze has a lot to live up to: The lakes’ 2014 ice covers were far greater than their averages for 1973 to 2013. For example, Lake Erie was about 75% ice last January — down from a typical average of about 30%.

The Great Lakes ice over every year! To say that it is the most in history is the lie: http://www.mlive.com/weather/index.ssf/2015/01/great_lakes_ice_cover_how_does.html
