hi d&o,

unfortunately, free market mavens insist that regulation is a dirty word.

but i agree in principle. if you can get modern pipelines well regulated and maintained - and also remove the explosive crap before the crude oil is moved anywhere, that is the best available option.

i wonder if there's a chemical way to neutralise oil prior to transport and then deneutralise it on arrival. analagous to adding chlorine to water. so that even if there's a spill it isn't toxic to the environment. probably not. i'm worthless as a chemist.
