3 Muslims Killed Over Parking in N.C.
Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder after he allegedly killed three neighbors in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Tuesday night. Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, of Chapel Hill; Yusor Mohammad, 21, of Chapel Hill; and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, of Raleigh were pronounced dead at the scene. All three were college students and Muslims. (Early reports rushed to cite Hicks’s self-proclaimed atheism, which he posted about on Facebook, as a motive). Police said Wednesday morning, however, that a dispute about parking in the condos where the victims and Hicks lived may have led to the shooting. “Our preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking,” spokesman Lt. Joshua Mecimore said.
Dr. Mohammad Abu-Salha, whose daughter was killed, said Hicks’s was full of hate.
“It was execution style, a bullet in every head. This was not a dispute over a parking space; this was a hate crime. This man had picked on my daughter and her husband a couple of times before, and he talked with them with his gun in his belt. And they were uncomfortable with him, but they did not know he would go this far.”
“We understand the concerns about the possibility that this was hate-motivated and we will exhaust every lead to determine if that is the case,” Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of these young people who lost their lives so needlessly.”
