When I was in high school I built Heathkits and Knight Kits. A SW radio, tube tester, VTVM, etc. And I've still got most of the stuff I built and they still work. The first color TV we had, back in the mid-70's, was a Heathkit (it's long gone).

The big electronics parts store in our area is Fry's Electronics. You could put all the Radio Shacks in SoCal inside the Fry's store in Anaheim and still have room left over for a couple of McDonalds.

...Radio Shack failed to change with the times. The first thing I ever got from them was a Crystal radio ya put together yourself. I could only pick up one station. I would sneak it out at night and listen to it til I fell asleep. I thought that working in a radio shack would be the best of all worlds.
