at the same time, while the law is one thing, there's something called civility.

being civil dictates that one does not egregiously insult someone.

for myself, i think the charlie hebdo stroy is about the right to express what you wish. we ought to criticise islam if we wish. i think many passages in the koran and hadith, and the bible, are repellant.

but it is not my desire for people to go on an insult rampage.

er. that sorta is what it means.

but under turkish rules, i might say "your religion insults me so you can't publish it here." and so on.

we define certain areas in which various societies exclude or offer remedies for certain sorts of speech, including things like paedophile literature, racial hate speech.

but this list excludes religion. it is valuable to us to criticise religion. we can't flatter our way to a peaceful model of islam. we have to use all the tools available to challenge it.
