Yesterday morning we had a similar problem.
After driving my son to his job at 6:20, on my return trip home it was nearly a whiteout. It was scary, many cars pulled off to the side of the Taconic State Pky, some kept driving with their flashers on.
A small truck was my 'eyes' for a few miles, then he relinquished & I took the lead. It was better, because his truck was kicking up more snow, but it was hairy. I kept praying & drove with care. The traffic going south was like a parking lot for miles, with several accidents. So I was lucky to be going north.
