We in the USA need to reinstate the Glass–Steagall Act.

That would give investors more confidence.

to be fair to leaders like mrs thatcher, the damage was also done along the road between the 1980s and 2008. striking the balance between generating wealth and avoiding risks is always tricky. but with the financial system, in particular, you need to exercise caution. if you have no trust, you have no value. the whole economy would have been irreparably damaged without the support of governmental institutions and tax payers. as things stand, it was merely harmed for almost a decade!
