democracy is very hard to institute.

we made it in western europe over hundreds of years and as a result of much bloodshed. the us took the idea, attempted to crystallise it in a document and made a country out of it.

elsewhere it has taken to a greater or lesser extent.

democracy isn't a cure-all. folks who think it creates perfect outcomes are mistaken. it's just a better way than the alternatives we know about. and it may not suit all cultures.

the most interesting developing democracy is iran, in my view. trying to merge a theocracy and a democracy is a curious experiment.

Hi Cactus Flower,

I agree, being skeptical is important. Learned that after years of brainwashing in parochial school ;))

As for 'democracy' being instituted by the US in 'any' country, that's a ridiculous presumption.
'You' can't 'force' democracy on others.
Nor can 'you' put more work into someone else than they are willing to do. Meaning, we can't fight for their freedom of choice, THEY need to fight that fight.

'We' should protect all we hold dear & be an example for others to want to exemplify.

'Religion' in the wrong hands is extremely dangerous.
Unfortunately, far too often in the wrong hands...
