Kennedy Blocks Pro-Gay Marriage Rulings
Just minutes after Idaho filed an emergency request for an immediate stay against an appeals court ruling that made same-sex marriage legal in the state, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy temporarily blocked that decision, as well as one in Nevada. On Tuesday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had declared gay marriage legal in Idaho and Nevada, just one day after the Supreme Court rejected appeals that effectively made gay marriage legal in dozens of states. Lawyers for same-sex couples were instructed to file a response by 5 p.m. Thursday. The order from Kennedy means that in the interim, gay and lesbian couples will not be able to get marriage licenses in those states.
